Pan head framing screws is one of the type of self tapping screws. Pan head framing screws that can tap its own thread without first drilling a hole. For hard substrates such as metal or hard plastics, Pan head framing screws are created by cutting gaps in the continuity of the threads on the screw, creating threads similar to those on a thread. Thus, an ordinary screw cannot tap its own hole in a metal substrate, but a pan head framing screws can (within reasonable limits of substrate hardness and depth) do it. For softer substrates such as wood or soft plastics, the pan head framing screws ability can occur simply from a tip that tapers to an inner edge point (where no groove is required). Similar to the tip of a nail or metal tack, such a point forms a hole by displacement of the surrounding material rather than any drilling/cutting/vacuuming action that forms chips. Pan head framing screws is one of the best self tapping screws for steel.
